We may think we have important lessons for America to learn, but might be better off keeping them to ourselves

As Republican supporters have become more annoyed at what they see as an endless series of demands on their resources from the outside world, the attitude to us has soured official complaint about Labour sending young volunteers to help get Kamala Harris elected

This appears to be a reference to the American revolution which – let us fact check – did end badly for Britain, but was a long time ago and is not on the minds of many Americans as they cast their vote this autumn. But in a race as tight as a Redcoat’s drum, you can’t be too careful, and there will be a few Democrats who wonder at what they might regard as the naivete of the social media post that led to the fuss.

This is a row that fits into a bigger picture. One of the things I noticed about America in the years I lived there was that attitudes towards Britain and the British seemed to be changing. Yes, we were often asked to say things again because our accents are so gorgeous, but sometimes I got the impression this adulation was reducing or at least being tempered by a growing sense of annoyance.

It was a small but perfectly formed disaster in US-UK relations. Thousands of letters were written to people who had registered as independent but many supported Bush and most hated the idea of being told how to vote.
