It's OK to return to the same place year after year - nostalgia holidays are deeply comforting ✒️ XeniaTaliotis
“I went every year until my 20s, when boyfriends distracted me, but I still didn’t miss more than year or two, so I began to form my own separate relationship with it. It always called me back, and I’d arrive there after a long journey from London to be greeted as if by an old and very dear friend. It was always just as I remembered.
“Since 2005, my partner and I have taken at least one holiday a year there – and in all seasons. My love for Fowey runs even deeper than its harbour. I feel an emotional attachment to it that goes far beyond. Of course, it holds the most precious memories – and yes, I do sometimes imagine I can see my father when I look across to that cottage – but it’s not the trips down recollection lane that draw me back. It’s Fowey itself, as it is now.
Fowey has changed in the half century Jane has been visiting, and she accepts that as necessary to attract new visitors. She is glad it now has some excellent coffee shops, but less welcoming of the chain shops, but “can still see the behind and above them, to the Fowey of old that frames them. The pubs are the same, even if the owners have long gone.
“The olive grove is on private land, and I cannot imagine that the family who own it will ever build on it. They respect the continuity of the landscape. Of course, there is intervention, as the trees are carefully managed, but there is still a feeling that nature is doing its own thing there. I can always find the rawness. I have a relationship with this place that I build on year on year. So many people travel to tick things off their bucket list.
