‘It was nearly worse than playing on Dipper’: AFL legend Doug Hawkins describes being struck by lightning during Melbourne's fierce storm on Thursday.

“It was nearly worse than playing on Dipper in the 80s and not knowing where he was at a loose footy.”Berto “Robert” DiPierdomenico, known as ‘Dipper’, represented Hawthorn from the 1970s to the 1990s. “I was too scared actually get out of the box to go to my car, which was about 10 metres away,” he said.“I jumped in the car and drove to the main hut, and I went in there, and it was like a delayed response,” he said.“I was talking to some of the first aiders in there and I said ‘Listen, I’m not feeling too great, I’m a bit light-headed, and I’ve got shivers up my left arm’.”
