How an evening driving around Leyland with friends cost Jack Moran his life
A young man who died in a crash was seen driving at twice the speed limit moments before the fatal collision.
He said the journey taken was a short one, starting at the Tesco superstore in Leyland where Jack and Mr Wright met up with the third friend, passing a couple of mini roundabouts and then some S-bends. The crash happened on a corner which forensic collisions investigator PC Ward described as "tightening" through the bend.
Giving evidence, Mr Wright said he had been picked up from his home by Jack before they went to meet up with other friends outside Tesco. Jack then invited the fried to go for a drive and Mr Wright said he continued with them and sat in the rear seat. Although he said he could not remember, he accepted the evidence suggested it was more likely he was not wearing a seat belt.
He said: "I think the factors of relatively high speed, front impact, car on tree impact, that combination is not infrequently a fatal collision sadly. I think even without a rear seat passenger the injuries would have significant enough to be fatal." Assistant coroner Richard Taylor said he could only record a conclusion of road traffic collision. He concluded: "Jack Andrew Moran died on March 15, 2022 on Runshaw Hall Lane of injuries sustained when he lost control of the vehicle he was driving and it struck a tree."
