Narelle King has teamed up with a leading Italian producer to make the first barolo in the Tar & Roses range. And it’s lovely.
″Tar and roses.” It’s a well-worn poetic description of red wines made from the nebbiolo grape in the vineyards of Barolo, in Piemonte, north-west Italy. It’s an accurate description, too. When it’s good, barolo combines the most ethereal, entrancing perfume – just like fading rose petals – with the deepest, most tongue-hugging tannins – a bit like licking bitumen. Savoury yet aromatic. Tar and roses.
Now, almost 20 years on, Tar & Roses has released a wine from the region that inspired the name: an impressive barolo bottled in collaboration with one of the region’s top producers.“Don and I were also making wine in Spain at the time Tar & Roses started,” says King. “So, as well as the Australian wines, we had a priorat . That stopped when the GFC happened, and we just concentrated on Australia.
“When I arrived, they weren’t picking yet,” she says. “But Giovanni Rosso also has vineyards in Sicily. So, I went down there, where they were harvesting carricante . Being back in Italy was lovely and familiar: I just love their approach to winemaking – they work hard, but the lifestyle is just as important.
