Several major Italian cities are on 'red alert' due to a heatwave gripping the nation, that is now set to worsen. Italy's health ministry warned on Monday there are now 13 cities included in the alert, after previously listing six major urban centres on Sunday. Milan is set for sweltering temperatures of up to 37C today and tomorrow, with 36C highs predicted for Florence.
Several people have died in Italy in recent days due to the extreme weather . Some parts of Greece could be as hot as 43C, with parts of Spain also expected to go over the 40C mark. The Directorate General of Public Health has urged people to avoid caffeinated drinks and alcohol, eat light meals, reserve physical activity for the first or last hours of the day, drink plenty of water and wear light, cool clothing made from natural fabrics.
