Mr Conte's resignation forced Italian President Sergio Mattarella to hold consultations with Italy's political parties to try to find a way out of the political crisis.The 5-Star and the Democratic Party parties agreed on Wednesday to put together a new coalition to pre-empt a snap election that could put Mr Salvini in power.
Many pundits sounded sceptical about the new coalition between former political foes that would only serve to delay the election that Mr Salvini is likely to win.On Tuesday, he received an unexpected endorsement from US President Donald Trump, who tweeted:"Starting to look good for the highly respected Prime Minister of the Italian Republic, Giuseppe Conte. Represented Italy powerfully at the G-7. Loves his Country greatly & works well with the USA.
