These days, you won't find a TV show where the studio audience smokes and downs pints of bitter while slowly getting sozzled as the cameras rolled. But that's exactly how the Wheeltappers and Shunters Social Club was filmed.
Manning's style of politically-incorrect comedy became increasingly unfashionable in the 1980s when the new breed of 'alternative' comedians began to take over, like Ben Elton and Alexi Sayle. As a result, Manning's audience became more marginalised as critics branded his humour sexist and racist. The show introduced a range of variety acts to the stage, from famous singers and bands to knife-throwers, contortionists, comedians, fire-eaters and "exotic dancers". The show's set was an authentic reconstruction of a northern social club at Granada Studios with audience members made up of coach-loads of people from local clubs around Lancashire.
