Episode six of The Long Shadow on ITV1 ended with scenes we've seen much more recently

The Long Shadow viewers said 'nothing has changed' after an emotional ending to the penultimate episode hinted heavily at much more recent protests about women's safety.

In the episode, police ignored tips from the public, often acted obtusely, and focused on bigoted details about Sutcliffe's crimes, instead of critical details. The most alarming being how police did not rush to act when they discovered a bloody handbag belonging to a potential victim. The police delays led people to believing Sutcliffe could have been caught then or at the least, the victim Jacqueline Hill, could have been found shortly after the attack, when she would have been alive.

On X , viewers spotted the similarities. @NomadicWriter said: "Those women demonstrating, carrying placards through the streets, saying ‘enough is enough’ could be the same women who stood up to be counted following the murder of Sarah Everard. Tragically times haven’t changed that much for women and girls. #TheLongShadow"

@Gemified wrote: "Watching the final scenes of this week's episode of #TheLongShadow and realising how much hasn't changed. Women are still having to protest about the right to be able to walk home safely. The placards still sat the same thing. Something has to change. #StopViolenceAgainstWomen"@JULES53685245 agreed: "Agree, all I could think about was the rape and murder of Sarah Everard.
