New England Patriots safety Jabrill Peppers was acquitted of domestic violence charges on Friday after a jury deliberated for just over an hour. Peppers had been accused of assaulting a single mother he'd seen on and off for a couple of years following a night out in October at his Braintree condo.
The woman claimed Peppers became enraged when she received a phone call during a sexual encounter and attacked her, grabbing her by the neck, smashing her head against the wall, assaulting her, and pushing her down a flight of stairs. However, Peppers denied the allegations, maintaining that the woman had slapped him and that he only asked her to leave because she wanted to have unprotected sex. During his testimony, Peppers described seeing his accuser at a party and said they had two espresso martinis before going to a nightclub, where he consumed two shots of tequila. He claimed they returned to his condo, engaged in sexual activity, and that the woman received multiple calls during this time. When she attempted to have unprotected sex, Peppers declined and asked her to leave, leading to an argument. Peppers' attorney presented video evidence shot by Peppers on his cellphone, depicting their dispute. The defense argued that Peppers was frustrated but never assaulted the woman, suggesting the accuser's story was fabricated for financial gain. The prosecution countered that this case was about control and Peppers' anger stemming from a loss of it. The jury ultimately believed Peppers' account, acquitting him of all charges. The Norfolk District Attorney's Office released a statement respecting the jury's decision and thanking them for their service
