In the wake of Andrews’ resignation, the Coalition have become convinced this is the best opportunity they’ve had in a long time.
That’s the calculation which will determine whether the government – under newly elected Premier Jacinta Allan – can win a historic fourth term in 2026.Standing in her way is an energised John Pesutto, a rare breed of Liberal who appreciated that while his party’s diminishing “base” loathed the former premier, Andrews was also a cult figure in Australian politics.
While it didn’t hurt him at the ballot box, Andrew’s desire to centralise power in his office undermined the independence of ministers and alienated members of the wider party.Allan comes to the role with a diminished authority, and that could present a stumbling block to her leadership, but the upshot could be a more consultative cabinet.
“Culturally she just doesn’t have the same understanding or experience in these areas,” one Labor official said. Jacinta Allan isn’t a new figure on Spring Street, having been elected in 1999, three years before Andrews. But to the public, she stands in contrast to Andrews, who one Labor powerbroker said was showing “all nine years of leadership in his complexion”.Recognition isn’t always a good thing, though. After all, it’s state politics; there is no need to be a rock star.
