Former advisor to John Howard, Peter McGauran, says he does not believe the appointment of Senator Jacinta Price and Kerrynne Liddle to the Coalition frontbench will improve the party’s standing on the issue of the Indigenous Voice to Parliament.

“But I still don’t think that either of them or both of them combined can change the fortunes of the Coalition in regard to the Voice.”

He said the 'best work' done for Indigenous communities in the Cape York Peninsula was with the support of former Prime Minister John Howard, who 'started the recognition process' in 2007. 'They find themselves now in a position where the new Labor government has picked up the ball and they've run with it,' Mr Pearson told Sky News Australia. 'Which of course, for advocates like me, we're very happy about – but if the true history were known about the development of the Voice idea, this was initially a conservative idea.'

Mr Pearson’s comments come as Mr Dutton continues his campaign for a no vote in the Indigenous Voice to Parliament referendum. “I’d say to Peter – what did you do the last nine years you were a cabinet minister?” Mr Pearson told Sky News Australia. “Why wasn’t he banging the drum in those nine years and why haven’t we fixed up Alice Springs in those nine years? “It’s just a bit disingenuous for him to go out there with Jacinta and bang the drum on Alice Springs when he had those nine years.”
