In 1997, an old Etonian with his nanny in tow contested the blue collar seat of Central Fife for the Conservatives. It was the start of a journey which saw Jacob Rees-Mogg - and his views move slowly into the frontline of British politics

Jacob Rees-Mogg canvassing support on a housing estate in Groban, Leven, part of the then Labour-held constituency of Central Fife during the 1997 UK General Election campaign. The first-time Conservative candidate was soundly beaten, garnering just nine per cent of the vote. Jacob Rees-Mogg’s entry into Westminster politics was, much like his departure in the early hours of Friday, typically eye-catching.

Despite his best efforts in Central Fife – staying in a luxury hotel with his nanny and driving around in his mother’s Mercedes – the wannabe MP halved the Tory vote share by amassing just 3,669 ballots. Whether it be abortion – he has described pregnancy terminations as a “cult of death” which should be forbidden even in cases of incest or rape – or same-sex marriage , or the continued use of fossil fuels , Rees-Mogg has long been firmly entrenched on what he last year described as the “national conservative” end of the political spectrum, founded on the “principle of national independence”.

Indeed, even Rees-Mogg himself realised his quasi-cartoonish habit of epitomising a certain English poshness and hauteur was not going to automatically endear him to a less class-ridden and more diverse United Kingdom. He once said: “I gradually realised that whatever I happened to be speaking about, the number of voters in my favour dropped as soon as I opened my mouth.
