Duduzile Zuma-Sambudla, daughter of former South African President Jacob Zuma, was arrested and charged with inciting violence through social media posts during the 2021 riots that claimed over 300 lives. She was released on warning pending a hearing in a higher court.

Duduzile Zuma-Sambudla, the daughter of former South African President Jacob Zuma , appeared in court facing charges related to her alleged involvement in the July 2021 riots that claimed over 300 lives. The 42-year-old, a Member of Parliament, handed herself over to police in Durban before appearing before the court. She is accused of inciting violence through her social media posts during that month, urging protesters to cause more damage as a show of support for her father.

Prosecutors allege she violated a law aimed at addressing threats to the state by inciting both terrorism and public violence. \ Zuma-Sambudla was released on a warning, similar to bail but without a monetary payment, as her case was transferred to a higher court for further proceedings in March. Her lawyer maintained that while she did post on Twitter about the riots, these posts did not incite violence. The unrest erupted four years ago following her father's imprisonment for contempt of court after he defied a government corruption inquiry's summons. Contributing factors to the violence included poverty, inequality, and public frustration over South Africa's COVID-19 lockdown measures at the time. \ Brigadier Thandi Mbambo, head of the Hawks special police unit, stated that Zuma-Sambudla's arrest stemmed from a thorough investigation prompted by the 2021 unrest that crippled the nation. The riots resulted in the deaths of approximately 350 people, widespread looting, the arrest of over 5,000 individuals, and damages exceeding £1.5 billion. This marked one of the most significant civil disturbances in South Africa since the end of apartheid in 1994. Jacob Zuma, 82, also appeared in court on the same day, with supporters of his uMKhonto weSizwe (MK) Party gathering outside. He previously served two months in prison for contempt of court and faces further charges of corruption, racketeering, fraud, tax evasion, and money laundering related to a 1999 arms deal with a French company. He vehemently denies any wrongdoing. The former president established the MK Party in 2024, years after his expulsion from the African National Congress (ANC) party following his imprisonment. In last year's election, MK secured 14.6% of the vote, while the ruling ANC experienced its worst-ever electoral performance
