The Jaipur Center for Art (JCA), established by HH Sawai Padmanabh Singh (Pacho) and Noelle Kadar, launched on November 22, 2024. Situated within Jaipur's iconic City Palace, the 2,600 sq. ft. public exhibition space aims to highlight Jaipur's cultural heritage while incorporating it into global contemporary art dialogues.
John Berger's statement, “The relation between what we see and what we know is never settled,” aptly encapsulates the possibilities that arise from this state of unsettlement. This sentiment is further explored by Jacques Lacan, who connects perception to desire, unconscious thought, and societal constructs. 'A function of time formulated for both, constance and variance,' curated by Peter Nagy, is the inaugural exhibition at the JCA. It delves into these unsettled territories through works by Indian and international artists who investigate how we perceive and interpret art, and consequently, the evolving nature of the present moment. The exhibition reimagines the interplay of time and space. Black and white photographs showcase films projected in empty theaters dissolving into luminous white screens framed by opulent interiors, while others reduce ocean horizons to stark yet contemplative black-and-white compositions. Dayanita Singh's 'Transformator,' a bronze-cast tree branch fused with a mirror ball, and 'Rain,' gold watch hands floating like fragments of time, distort our understanding of materiality and logic. Sean Scully's work dissolves into fleeting reflections, embodying the poetic truth of illusion. It distorts and discomforts our own reflection as we approach its shiny surface, witnessing ourselves as we witness art. Lastly, L.N. Tallur and Manjunath Kamath explore history through sculptural interventions, distorting traditional forms in works like © Hiroshi Sugimoto. Courtesy Lisson Gallery. © Manjunath Kamath.
