James Patterson's cultured detective has made the jump from book to screen again, but this series is too implausible to workPrime Video’s new eight-part thriller’s bestselling book series about Washington, DC detective Alex Cross, but it’s not based on any specific novel. The result is a frustrating show that swings between compelling drama and hackneyed melodrama – alas, more often the latter.
He is also dealing with grief over his wife’s murder a year ago. Or rather, he isn’t dealing with it. He puts on his best suit to visit her grave but can’t get past the cemetery gates. His two children are walking on eggshells in case they “make Daddy sad”. His friends want him to see a therapist but he knows he’ll find no peace until he catches his wife’s killer. Unfortunately, he has no leads.
Hodge is persuasive as the charismatic Cross. He’s a cultured intellectual – he knows his Shakespeare, he delights in his son playing Debussy on the piano – but is also built like a linebacker and pretty useful in a boxing ring. He is almost demented with anguish over his wife’s death, but several beautiful women are very keen to comfort him and he’s not entirely immune to their blandishments.
