Everton's James Tarkowski is preparing to face a 'very different' style of Burnley side than he played for as he faces his former club for the first time in the Carabao Cup at Goodison Park

The last time Burnley came to Goodison Park, James Tarkowski was facing Everton and got accused by Gary Neville of making a tackle that “has no place in football.”

Now wearing the armband at Everton in the absence through injury of club captain Seamus Coleman, Tarkowski is one of Dyche’s most-trusted lieutenants. So as he prepares to face the club he represented for six-and-a-half years as an opponent for the first time, who would he rather come up against, old or new Burnley? He said: “We were a completely different side. We had a lot of success playing the way we did at the time.

Despite sacking Dyche on April 15, 2022 after nine-and-a-half years in charge, Burnley failed to avoid relegation. But under new boss Kompany they romped to the Championship title last season with 101 points. Life in the Premier League has proven much tougher so far though and they arrive for their Carabao Cup tie at Goodison Park on Wednesday second bottom of the table with four points from their 10 matches following a 2-1 loss at fellow strugglers Bournemouth on Saturday.

“I think they have a bit more inexperience than we had. We had a few more senior players in the team, but they showed last season with the way they played and the amount of points they picked up in the Championship, which is a very difficult league, so I am sure they will pick up more points. But it is just a step up and they seem to be getting punished at the minute.”

“I feel like I’ve managed through it through years of fighting relegation battles – even last season – so I try not to overthink and beat myself up about results. The points deduction is something which is well out of our control so it’s not something even discussed between the lads.
