Japanese fighter aircraft were scrambled over three dozen times in April to intercept Chinese and Russian military planes suspected of possible airspace violations, Tokyo's Defense Ministry said on Tuesday.Monthly data published by the Joint Staff of Japan's Self-Defense Forces recorded 13 emergency air force launches against nearby Russian aircraft and 28 against approaching Chinese planes.
Newsweek's map, created using approximate geospatial data released by Japan's Defense Ministry, traces the flight paths of three sorties—one by a Chinese plane and two by Russian aircraft—which the Joint Staff categorized as notable in April.On April 1, a Chinese Air Force Y-9 electronic reconnaissance aircraft flew between the East China Sea and the Philippine Sea via the Miyako Strait, between the Japanese islands of Miyako and Okinawa.
