This small cuboid satellite will likely be launched in September from the Kennedy Space Center aboard a SpaceX rocket.
There has been quite a buzz surrounding Japan ’s creation of the world’s first wooden satellite. After years of meticulous planning, research into wood materials, and development, this unique satellite is now ready for launch.
The magnolia wood-based satellite will face the ultimate test of its strength and durability, enduring extreme temperatures and intense solar radiation from the Sun. This experimental satellite will stay operational for only 5-6 months. It took years of dedicated work and research to identify the right kind of wood. For this purpose, the university collaborated with the logging company Sumitomo Forestry to test various wood samples.
Studies have shown that aluminum particles may contribute to the depletion of the ozone layer, which protects the Earth from the Sun’s damaging UV radiation. Experts predict that satellite launches are expected to increase exponentially in the coming years. This means that an increasing number of defunct satellites will return to the atmosphere after their missions are completed.
