Plans for Japanese troops to train alongside US Marines in northern Australia next year will be discussed during high-level talks in Darwin on Sunday hosted by Defence Minister Richard Marles. As concerns grow over Beijing's continuing militarisation of the South China Sea, Mr Marles emphasised the importance of ties with Japan and the United States, saying the "enduring partnership is crucial to collective deterrence in our region".
A defence official, who was not authorised to comment publicly, told the ABC that the three nations would this weekend highlight "trilateral cooperation in the north through the inclusion of Japan in exercises alongside MRF-D in its next rotation".
