A loud explosion occurred at a western Japanese port on Saturday during Prime Minister Fumio Kishida’s visit, prompting him to take cover, Japanese media said.

Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida was evacuated to safety on Saturday after a loud explosion was heard at an event he attended in Japan, in a reminder of last year’s assassination of former leaderKishida had been touring a fishing port in the western prefecture of Wakayama supporting a candidate in his Liberal Democratic Party when a smoke bomb was thrown at the venue, according to media reports. He was unharmed and there were no other injuries.A man was arrested at the scene.

Police have not given details about the suspect or his motives, but the event has chilling echoes of the fatal shooting of Abe during a campaign speech ahead of last year’s upper house elections. Five by-elections are set to be held next weekend, including in the constituency left vacant by Abe’s death.

The incident also comes just as Japan prepares to host a G7 summit next month in Hiroshima, where security had been a high priority. G7 ministers are also having meetings on the northern island of Hokkaido and in the resort town of Karuizawa this weekend. A man, centre, who threw what appeared to be a smoke bomb, is caught at a port in Wakayama, western Japan on Saturday.A representative of the Wakayama police department declined to comment to Bloomberg News.

Video posted online by Japanese news outlets showed multiple people tackling a figure at the fishing port, and shortly after a loud explosion is heard, with white smoke spreading as the crowd scatters.A woman on the scene told NHK that she saw an object flying overhead and “it gave me a bad feeling, so we ran away unbelievably fast. Then we heard a really loud noise. It made my daughter cry.
