That’s the message, which is tricky considering Monahan is the first to acknowledge he lost quite a bit of equity with the players this summer. But the thesis of Monahan’s one-hour conversation with reporters Wednesday was essentially that he believes this is the best move for the PGA Tour, and he made it for a reason. So don’t judge it until you fully see what happens next.
This has been and continues to be the defining stretch of Monahan’s career, and he’s attempting to maneuver it while dealing with some of his most difficult personal struggles. But then his health issues declined to the point he had to step away for five weeks, resulting in in two other representatives of the tour, not Monahan, testifying in front of Congress.“I realized I needed to step away and deal with that, to understand how to develop the skills to deal with that going forward,” he said. “You can’t wait when you’re in a situation like that. I needed to deal with it. I needed to deal with it for my family and myself.
While discussing his issues, Monahan changed his body language for the first time. He went from hunched over and staring straight to leaning back and putting his arm over his chair. He slightly opened up. He called himself “a work in progress.” He was then asked if the tour is engaged in conversations with any other investors. He said, “Our focus is on the conversations with PIF.”
