JCB , a renowned British construction equipment manufacturer, recently celebrated a significant milestone: the production of its one millionth backhoe loader . This achievement marks a remarkable journey for the company, which began in a former cheese factory in Rocester over 80 years ago. The first JCB backhoe, known as the Mark One, revolutionized the construction industry by introducing hydraulic power to equipment.
It took over 20 years for JCB to produce its first 50,000 backhoes, and another 59 years to reach the half-million mark. However, the production rate accelerated significantly in recent decades, with the next half million backhoes being produced in less than 13 years. To commemorate this momentous occasion, hundreds of employees gathered outside JCB's World HQ to witness a parade of 16 backhoes spanning different eras. Lord Bamford, the company's Chairman, reflected on the company's humble beginnings and expressed his excitement for the future of backhoe production. The millionth backhoe, a 3CX model adorned with graffiti art, was presented to Lord Bamford during the celebrations. Adding to the significance of the event was the presence of Ken Harrison, a retired JCB welder who joined the company in 1952 when only 29 people worked on the shop floor. Mr. Harrison, one of the last surviving members of the team that built the first JCB backhoes, was welcomed in style in a chauffeur-driven Jaguar. He shared anecdotes about the company's early days, describing the long hours, camaraderie, and the sense of purpose that drove the team. Mr. Harrison's story highlights the enduring legacy of JCB's workforce and the company's commitment to its employees. His family has a long and storied history with JCB, with 13 other relatives following in his footsteps, accumulating over 350 years of service to the company

Chile's Copper Production to Reach 5.54Mt in 2034Chile's state copper commission, Cochilco, projects copper production to reach 5.54 million tonnes in 2034, a 5.6% increase from 2023. The figure is lower than previous projections due to a change in methodology. Peak production is expected in 2027 with 6.07 million tonnes. While cathode production is projected to decline, concentrate production will strengthen due to the greater availability of sulphide minerals. Chile is still expected to remain the leading global copper producer, with its share of global production increasing from 23.6% in 2024 to 27.3% in 2034.
