Jean-Claude Van Damme Is Back… But Did He Ever Leave? Close Darkness of Man promises the return of Jean-Claude Van Damme, but it also raises the question of whether the actor ever left in the first place. Van Damme’s last live-action movie appearances were in 2021 in Haters and The Last Mercenary, but over the last decade the actor has been in a relatively steady stream of projects. He even reprised his character from the long-running Kickboxer franchise in 2018’s Kickboxer: Retaliation.
Interestingly, considering his fighting prowess, Van Damme’s most popular and well-reviewed projects of the last 10 years have not been live-action. Van Damme played Kung Fu Panda’s Master Croc in that franchise’s second and third movies, and voiced a character called Jean-Clawed in Minions: The Rise of Gru. Van Damme’s work even extends to the realm of video games, where he played Johnny Cage in Mortal Kombat 1.
There is still plenty to love about seeing one of the best movie martial artists on screen. Darkness of Man looks to bring the icon back into the fold in style, telling an emotional story that sees Van Damme’s Russell taking on a paternal role even as he does what he does best in the face of danger.
