Bill Condon, director of 'Kiss of the Spider Woman,' reveals why Jennifer Lopez was the perfect choice to lead the cast, highlighting her remarkable range in portraying three distinct characters. Condon praises Lopez's ability to seamlessly navigate the different roles, delivering 11 captivating musical numbers.
Bill Condon , the 69-year-old director of Kiss of the Spider Woman, believes Jennifer Lopez was the perfect choice to lead the cast. The movie, based on the stage musical of the same name, required an actress with versatility, and Condon felt Lopez possessed the range to portray three distinct characters: Spider Woman, Aurora, and Ingrid. In addition to acting, Lopez also delivers 11 musical numbers throughout the film, a testament to her talent.
'Jennifer plays three parts in the movie,' Condon shared. 'She plays an actress, she plays the lead character in the movie within the movie, and then another character in the movie – she plays Spider Woman, Aurora, and Ingrid. Three separate parts.' The director emphasized that no one else on Earth could have accomplished this feat, especially considering the demanding four-week shooting schedule before the film crew moved to Uruguay to film the prison scenes. Condon praised Lopez's performance, particularly her ability to capture the essence of a 1950s movie style without mocking or trivializing it. He acknowledged the delicate nature of her role, stating, 'Music and dance is a huge part of it, but that does not at all diminish the performance she gave. It's an unbelievably delicate thing she pulled off because she's acting in the style of a 1950s movie, but never, ever, ever mocking it or making fun of it. She's making it real. I don't know anybody else who could have done it.' The film also stars Diego Luna, who Condon cast for his intelligence, compassion, and humanity, qualities he deemed ideal for the character of a student revolutionary. Condon shared his admiration for Luna, stating, 'I wanted him in the movie because, in this telling, it's a love story. These qualities that Diego has – intelligence, compassion, humanity, all of that – are the almost ideal version of a student revolutionary. But I have to say, working with him, I'm as huge a fan as you are. I think he's really among the best, if not the best actor I've ever worked with. It just astonishes you. Also, he's a great collaborator. He's somebody who has produced movies and directed movies. The experience is something I'll treasure forever.' Jennifer Lopez herself expressed her excitement about landing the role, revealing that she had been waiting her entire life for a chance to star in a grand MGM Hollywood musical.
