“Sometimes I still feel like an underdog, but I like explaining myself and I like expressing what I like about myself.” 🎙️ alexjpollard interviews Jenny Slate
There’s even a touch of existential melancholy in the three-and-a-half-minute clip: “My one regret in life is that I’ll never have a dog,” says Marcel, followed by several seconds of sombre silence, before he adds brightly: “but sometimes I tie a hair to a piece of lint and I drag it around!”has been made into a feature film.
The point of Marcel, says Slate, was to distil her own essence into its purest form. “There’s so much connotation placed on how we present physically, even if we haven’t said anything yet,” she says. “But if you create a creature we’ve never seen before, what sticks out the most are the feelings. A disguise doesn’t have to be a lie or a trick. It can just be a way of dimming down some of the more restrictive connotations – of just, for a moment, purifying an expression that you want to make.
Some of them, she adds, are the limits of her own mindset. “Like, ‘I can’t come in here and say this because everybody’s just going to be thinking of me as this 40-year-old woman.’ Because of my own internalised misogyny that I’m still stripping off every day, pulling out that root.
“When you’re going through a loss,” says Slate, “you can feel like you are the only person going through it. And there’s truth in that. Your loss – your specific loss – you are partnered with it. It’s a singular experience. But that doesn’t mean that it is unseeable. It doesn’t mean that you yourself are invisible. We just really wanted to show that anybody is capable of handling it. You are not too young, or too old, to handle the fact that loss is real. And change is a beautiful part of loss.
