The two former health secretaries declared their plans in the Sunday Telegraph
Sajid Javid and Jeremy Hunt are the latest Tory MPs to join the leadership race to replace Boris Johnson. The former health secretaries made their announcements in The Sunday Telegraph.
The pair are both calling for tax cuts. Mr Javid is looking to scrap an increase in National Insurance, while Mr Hunt wants to help businesses, according to the BBC. Mr Javid said: “I’m not sure I would have done it if I had been chancellor, but I was focused on my job and I’m not trying to do other people’s jobs for them.”
They are the latest big names to announce they will stand to become the leader of the Conservative party. Earlier today, Chancellor Nadhim Zahawi and Transport Secretary Grant Shapps announced they were throwing their hat in the ring. On Thursday, Boris Johnson announced he would be resigning as Prime Minister following growing pressure for him to go. In the speech, which was met with applause from supporters, Mr Johnson said it was now clear ‘there should be a new Prime Minister’. He said he will remain in place until a new leader takes over.
