Its aims were threefold: to counter the sense of decline and misery that pervades the political class and the country, to provide a convincing story about national resurgence, and to show that Brexit is a core part of that process. He managed the first two badly and the third not at all. The core problem with this argument is that the Government has rejected flexibility in favour of messianic year-zero fabulism. The Retained EU Law bill, which is currently about to have the shit kicked out of it in the Lords, sets a deadline of 31 December, at which point all EU rules based on delegated legislation will be switched off unless ministers intervene.
The reason they lie forever in the future is because they do not exist. But what does exist are the problems it has created – for British businesses, for exporters and importers, for labour markets, for our regulatory stability, our influence and our reputation. But Hunt, of course, cannot concede that.
