FTX debtors have claimed in a court filing that the parents of the disgraced cryptocurrency entrepreneur misappropriated funds to “enrich themselves”.
FTX has alleged the pair “exploited their access and influence” at the business to “enrich themselves”, as they benefitted from perks such as luxury hotel stays and the use of private jets.
The professor allegedly received “millions of dollars in unearned ‘gifts’ and real property, flew on privately chartered jets, expensed $US1200 per night hotel stays to the FTX Group, and even appeared in a Super Bowl commercial”. Ms Fried allegedly asked FTX staff to place orders for items including a sofa, eight vases and a $US2500 Persian hand-knotted rug.
Mr Bankman directed more than $US5.5 million in charitable contributions from FTX to Stanford University in what the complaint describes as “naked self-dealing” in an attempt to “curry favour with and enrich his employer at the FTX Group’s expense”.
