A global IT outage on Friday caused major travel disruption
Jet2 and Tui have reassured passengers that flights will go ahead unless they hear otherwise following the global IT outage on Friday. Jet2 said it ‘envisages’ flights to return to normal today, Saturday July 20, while Tui urged customers to travel to the airport ‘as normal’ if they are not contacted by their airline.
The outage led to the failure of online check ins, while some departure screens at airports stopped working, resulting in a build-up of delayed flights and cancellations. It affected airports across the world, not just the UK.According to aviation data analysts Cirium, 6,855 flights were cancelled globally yesterday – equating to 6.2per cent of all scheduled flights. Meanwhile 207 flights were cancelled departing UK airports yesterday , with a further 201 inbound arrivals cancelled.
In a statement on its website, Jet2 said: ”Following the large-scale IT outage that was affecting airport systems on 19th July. We envisage our flying programme to be back to normal from 20th July. Tui has told passengers travelling this weekend to head to the airport ‘as normal’ but to ‘expect longer wait times’.
