White, a six-time World Championship runner-up and 10-time ranking title winner, explains his reasoning for choosing O'Sullivan as the greatest, citing his numerous titles, centuries, and effortless style of play.
Jimmy White , a renowned figure in snooker, has a well-informed perspective on who reigns supreme in the sport's history. With six World Championship runner-up finishes, 10 ranking titles including the UK Championship, and a Masters crown to his name, White's experience speaks volumes. Currently active on the World Snooker Tour at the age of 62, he also serves as a Eurosport commentator, having shared the table with and observed the sport's greatest legends.
In a 2023 Eurosport segment, White placed his close friend and seven-time world champion Ronnie O'Sullivan at the pinnacle of his list, slightly ahead of Scottish icon Stephen Hendry and Steve Davis. He declared, 'Ronnie O'Sullivan for sure the GOAT, greatest of all time. Seven world titles, seven UK titles, seven Masters titles, more than 1,200 centuries so far in his career. Why he's so good is because he makes the game look so easy. That is why Ronnie O'Sullivan is the greatest of all time.' O'Sullivan, 49, has since added both the UK Championship and Masters to his already impressive trophy cabinet. However, questions linger about his future at the top level following a series of tournament withdrawals due to medical reasons. White ranked Hendry, another seven-time world champion, as his second choice.Hendry's four victories against White, a feat White admits he should have prevented at least twice, cemented his position. White acknowledged, 'A great champion, five-time Masters champion on the trot. He got into his own bubble and nothing fazed him. I have got to put him slightly in front of Steve Davis.' White considers Davis one of the toughest opponents he's ever faced. He praised Davis' exceptional long potting, temperament under pressure, and consistent performance. Completing White's top 10 are Mark Selby, Mark Williams, Alex Higgins, John Higgins, Ray Reardon, and Joe Davis. If asked to create the list today, White might consider adding Judd Trump, the current world number one, who has already secured significant victories this year, including the £500,000 Saudi Arabia Masters and his second UK Championship title.
