One of Scotland’s most scenic tourist attractions is recruiting wildlife enthusiasts to skipper traditional boats around a seal colony on the Isle of Skye. Dunvegan Castle &is looking to expand its marine operations team ahead of the busy visitor season, with successful applicants tasked with leading seal watching trips across Loch Dunvegan.

The role involves operating one of three traditional clinker-built powerboats carrying up to seven passengers at a time on short cruises to view the loch’s resident common seal colony. According to the job description, successful candidates will be responsible for ensuring passenger safety while also protecting theand wildlife to enhance the tourist experience. The estate said the trips must be conducted in a way that avoids disturbing the seals and other protected species living around the loch.

Applicants are required to hold an RYA Powerboat Level II licence alongside commercial endorsements including VHF radio certification, sea survival training, first aid qualifications and a valid medical certificate, although additional training will also be provided on site. The job description states candidates should have a strong working knowledge of Loch Dunvegan and be comfortable working in changing weather and marine conditions.

Staff will also be expected to navigate tides, wind conditions and changing water levels while safely operating the boats throughout the day. The role includes responsibility for mooring boats between trips, securing equipment and supporting wider marine operations across the estate. The position also places heavy emphasis on customer service, with staff expected to provide what the estate describes as a “warm, Highland welcome” to visitors arriving for seal trips and cruises.

Applicants should be comfortable speaking with tourists, answering questions and handling complaints when necessary. The estate said marine crew members would also receive specialist training on the seal colony and wider marine wildlife to ensure protected habitats are respected. The job advert highlights that employees may occasionally be asked to assist with additional duties across the wider estate operation.

DunveganThe estate stretches from Loch Dunvegan in the north to the Black Cuillin mountains in the south and contains several protected conservation areas and Sites of Special Scientific Interest. Around 96 per cent of the estate is subject to crofting and farm tenure, while the remaining land includes native woodland aroundThe area is also known for its wildlife, with visitors regularly spotting seals, seabirds and marine species around the loch and coastline.

The marine operations department forms part of one of the estate’s busiest visitor attractions during the tourist season, with seal trips remaining one of the most popular activities for people visiting Skye. The job advert also stresses the importance of health and safety responsibilities, including regular safety checks, accident reporting and risk assessments. Employees are expected to follow strict operational procedures and immediately report unsafe practices or damaged equipment to management.
