Alcoa is unsure whether staff numbers at the Portland smelter will need to be cut on the back of a technical problem that cut production capacity to 75 per cent.

Aluminium giant Alcoa says it is too early to know whether employee numbers at its Portland smelter in Victoria will need to be cut after it was forced to partially backflip on a strategy to reopen idled capacity.

The rodded anodes are placed in smelting pots and help to conduct the electricity that splits alumina into oxygen and pure aluminium. Alcoa said the duration of the curtailment was “yet to be determined” but it had nothing to do with the supply of electricity.secured the future of the smelter until at least July 31, 2026.
