The President had faced growing calls from his own party to step down
In a letter addressed to “my fellow Americans”, the US President, 81, said: “It has been the greatest honor of my life to serve as your President. And while it has been my intention to seek re-election, I believe it is in the best interest of my party and the country for me to stand down and to focus solely on fulfilling my duties as President for the remainder of my term.“For now, let me express my deepest gratitude to all those who have worked so hard to see me reelected.
Mr Biden also said he wanted to offer his “full support and endorsement” for the US Vice President, Kamala Harris, to replace him as the Democrat’s presidential candidate. His withdrawal comes after a growing chorus of Democratic politicians and donors had called for the 81-year-old to stand aside, with
Joe Biden’s granddaughter Naomi Biden said she is “proud” of how her grandfather served “our country” following his decision to end his 2024 bid for the presidency.
