In a speech to a raucous chamber Congress, the US President talked up his economic gains, while appearing to lay the groundwork for a re-election bid.
Joe Biden has used his first State of the Union address before the newly divided Congress to reaffirm an expansive vision for political reform, outlining changes to the economy while calling for law enforcement and immigration policies to be improved.
Two years into his first term as president, Biden also appealed for political unity, calling on Congress to work together to advance some of his most ambitious policies, such as a ban on assault weapons, higher taxes on billionaires, and greater security at the US-Mexico border.“The people sent us a clear message: fighting for the sake of fighting, power for the sake of power, conflict for the sake of conflict, gets us nowhere,” he said.
“Contact my office!” Biden responded amid the angry heckles from Republican members. “I’ll give you a copy [of the proposal].” And after entering the chamber to a standing ovation, Biden shook McCarthy’s hand and then cracked a joke: “Speaker, I don’t want to ruin your reputation, but I look forward to working with you”.
“Two years ago, COVID had shut down our businesses, closed our schools, and robbed us of so much,” he said. “Today, COVID no longer controls our lives. And two years ago, our democracy faced its greatest threat since the Civil War. Today, though bruised, our democracy remains unbowed and unbroken.”
