Former Liverpool player Joe Cole advises Trent Alexander-Arnold to remain at Anfield and aim for another Premier League title despite Real Madrid's interest.
Former England international Joe Cole has urged Trent Alexander-Arnold to remain at Liverpool until the season's conclusion, expressing confidence that the defender can cap his Anfield journey with a Premier League title. Alexander-Arnold, 26, faces an uncertain future as his contract expires at the end of the season. On New Year's Eve, Real Madrid expressed interest in acquiring the defender during the January transfer window.
However, Liverpool rejected the approach from the European Super League proponents. Although Alexander-Arnold started Sunday's 2-2 draw against Manchester United, he faced criticism for his performance, as United players, particularly Diogo Dalot and Bruno Fernandes, exploited Liverpool's right flank. Cole, who spent three years at Liverpool after joining in 2010, believes Alexander-Arnold can recover from his subpar display against United and deliver a strong finish to the season at Anfield. Discussing Alexander-Arnold's situation with Paddy Power, Cole stated, 'A player of his quality doesn't need to depart mid-season, especially with the opportunity to win another title, which would be a fantastic way to conclude his Liverpool career.' He added, 'What we know is that every passing day and week will fuel speculation, but I'm confident the player at the center of this storm will persevere and continue, adding more trophies to his collection this year, whether it's at Liverpool or Real Madrid.' Cole acknowledged the complexity of evaluating Alexander-Arnold's contract stand-off, emphasizing that only the defender and Liverpool officials possess the full context of the situation. He remarked, 'We don't know the situation, and that's the problem. First and foremost, Trent is a superb footballer and a wonderful player. There are certain aspects he excels at more than others, but he is a fantastically talented footballer in the midst of a remarkable career. What we lack is clarity regarding the situation with Liverpool and where they envision him, and where Trent sees himself.
