Amid the backlash he has been facing since posting a video now viewed over 3 million times in which he appears to shred £10,000 in cash, Joe Lycett has set the record straight on his own Qatar involvement as David Beckham responds to the criticism.
“I get the point you’re making, it’s valid, but shedding £10,000 is a total waste because it’s not going to force anyone to change. That money could’ve gone somewhere where it WOULD make a difference,” one Twitter user“Shredding £10,000 no matter how legitimate your point when millions are using food banks in the UK is not progressive,”“If you feel uncomfortable about Joe Lycett shredding £10,000, that’s exactly the point,” wrote.
But, ultimately, all this arguing was irrelevant. The following day, Joe Lycett came forward with an update in a follow-up video. His big reveal? Of course he didn’t shred £10k. “When you didn’t end your relationship or even respond in any way, I streamed myself dropping £10k into a shredder. Or did I?” he says. “I haven’t quite told you the whole truth. Because the truth is, the money that went into the shredder was real, but the money that came out was fake.”He goes onto explain that, in fact, £10,000 had already been donated to LGBTQ+ charities. “I never expected to hear from you. It was an empty threat designed to get people talking,” he reveals.
, which aired on Channel 4 on Thursday, the comedian read out a statement provided by Beckham’s representatives, in which a spokesperson said he sees it as “positive” that debate about “key issues” has been “stimulated” by the contest being held in the country.
