Move described as 'precautionary;' team believes right-hander can be back in mid-May
The Padres will be without starting pitcher Joe Musgrove for at least the next couple turns through the rotation. The right-hander is experiencing discomfort near the rear of his right elbow attributed to triceps tendinitis, and the team decided to shut him down for a period of rest. He was placed on the 15-day injured list Sunday . The decision was described as 'precautionary' and akin to the move to put Yu Darvish on the IL last month with neck tightness.
The hope is Musgrove will be ready to start in the Padres series in Atlanta against the Braves that begins April 17. Randy Vasquez was called up from Triple-A and will meet the Padres in Chicago, where Musgrove was scheduled to start Tuesday against the Cubs. Vasquez, who allowed eight runs in 7⅔ innings in two starts in place of Darvish, is expected to make Tuesday’s start. The Padres could also decide to use Vasquez in combination with Jhony Brito that day if Brito is not needed before then.
