In some respects, this is not surprising. Leading her country through theis bound to have taken a substantial emotional and physical toll on the First Minister. After all, it was not a job that she delegated to her ministers – she did nearly all the press conferences, encouraged the public during her significant announcements, and, in so doing, deployed her formidable communication skills to maximum effect.
For the most part, her handling of the pandemic won her praise and respect, but making decisions that affected people’s lives and health so profoundly was not easy. There was always a question as to how much longer she would want and feel able to carry on with the job. Now that the pandemic has finally receded from the headlines, it seems that Sturgeon has come to recognise and accept the impact that it has had on her too.
However, this was not just a personal decision. Since Sturgeon became leader in 2014, her party has not been more disquieted and divided than now. In part, the debate has been about the controversialthat the UK Government has now vetoed. However, Sturgeon’s resignation speech also acknowledged a much deeper political problem she was facing – that it was no longer clear that she could give the party effective strategic leadership on its raison d’etre, the pursuit of independence.
