Glasgow has been officially confirmed as the host of the Commonwealth Games in 2026 and the First Minister said he would be 'very supportive' of it being named after Hoy, who has revealed he has terminal cancer.
First Minister John Swinney said hosting the Commonwealth Games can provide Glasgow with “significant” economic benefit and improved sports facilities, as the city was officially confirmed as host of the 2026 event.
The First Minister reiterated this pledge at a media event on Tuesday — with the games reduced further if it would exceed its set budget. He said there is a “substantial investment from the Commonwealth Games Federation of about £100m” and a “contingency of about £24m which will be drawn on should that be necessary”.
Mr Swinney added: “There is going to be investment in the sporting facilities of the city of Glasgow, which is going to be a good thing. The 23rd edition of the games will return to the city 12 years after Glasgow last hosted in 2014. Around 3,000 athletes from up to 74 Commonwealth nations and territories are set to compete, with over 500,000 tickets to be made available.
Jon Doig, CEO of Commonwealth Games Scotland, added: “When we started pulling this concept together just under a year ago, our focus was on creating a Games that was different – that could be delivered to the highest quality, in the short time frame, in a financially sustainable way.
