The First Minister said Police Scotland was engaged in 'sophisticated' monitoring of social media posts to ensure a swift response to any planned disturbances in Scotland.

John Swinney visited a mosque in Edinburgh to tell Scots Muslims the Government is "on their side" following a spate of attacks south of the Border.

"To anyone who contemplates acting against that - the full force of the law is available to ensure that any such behaviour will be addressed." Swinney had previously warned against "unhelpful speculation" relating to the stabbing of a woman in Stirling. However, in an unusual move for the force, Police Scotland said the man arrested was white and from the local area. The claim, described by police as “false”, comes amid unrest across England and in Belfast in recent days after the murders of three young girls in Southport on Monday.

"I wanted to reassure the Muslim community in Scotland, as I wanted to reassure all communities, of the importance we attach to cohesion in our communities. For people to live in safety and to feel safe in their communities, and to have the support of the Government and the police."
