Manchester music legend Johnny Marr is auctioning off 20 personally signed Gibson Les Paul guitars to raise funds for Teenage Cancer Trust. The guitars are inspired by Marr's beloved 1984 Cherry Red Gibson Les Paul Standard with Bigsby, which he used extensively during his time with The Smiths and other prominent bands. The limited-edition instruments will be available for purchase at the Gibson Garage London store on February 21st, with all proceeds going directly to the charity.

Manchester music legend Johnny Marr has announced he will be releasing a very limited line of guitars - all in aid of charity. The former guitarist for The Smiths has personally signed 20 Gibson ’84 Les Paul Standard with Bigsby guitars and fans will need to make the journey up to London next week if they fancy being one of the very lucky recipients of one.

The guitars hold very special significance to Johnny, 61, as they are inspired by his Cherry Red Gibson Les Paul Standard with Bigsby from 1984, which he first played during the recording of The Smiths’ iconic second album Meat is Murder. Later becoming the Ardwick-born star's ‘go-to’ guitar, it was used extensively in both live performances and recording sessions with The Smiths. The guitar was also used during Johnny's time as a member of The The, The Pretenders and The Cribs, as well as during his work with Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds. Made from mahogany and created to match up to the original as closely as possible, the 20 guitars will only be available to buy next Friday (February 21) from the Gibson Garage London store with all proceeds going directly to Teenage Cancer Trust. “These guitars are a faithful reproduction of my beloved 1984 Gibson Les Paul, bought in Manchester back in the day,” Johnny said of the collection. “It’s the guitar I’ve kept and used since that time on loads of different records, so I was beyond delighted to see it recreated in aid of Teenage Cancer Trust. It’s an amazing organisation that I've had an association with for about ten years. 'It’s a privilege to be involved in this good cause and I’m very glad to be affiliated with it, especially when it involves making a fantastic Les Paul.” The store, on Eastcastle Street near Tottenham Court Road underground station, will open from 11am with the guitars available to purchase right away on the day. But, due to their limited quantity, there is expected to be big demand for the special instruments. Alongside the guitars, there will also be an exclusive range of Teenage Cancer Trust and Gibson merchandise available to buy in-store. These include t-shirts, hoodies and caps, featuring a new design by Jamie Hewlett to celebrate the 25th year of Teenage Cancer Trust at the Royal Albert Hall. The artwork will also feature illustrations depicting the guitar. “The influence of Johnny Marr can be seen and heard across generations of musicians,” says Jamie Johnson, Head of Music and Entertainment at Teenage Cancer Trust. “Not only is he an incredible writer and player, but he has a huge depth of knowledge in his craft. “Combined with Gibson’s generosity and mastery we are thrilled to be benefitting from this unique opportunity. The support we receive from Johnny and Gibson can be seen across the UK where we are able to make very real and meaningful differences to young people with cancer. Thank you to Johnny and the team at Gibson for their kindness and generosity.
