I must have missed the memo about the new pet store opening in Blackburn because it was only this week that I heard of its existence. Jollyes , which also has stores in Leyland, Southport and Bolton and more than 100 across the UK, started in 1971 and opened its Blackburn store next to Halfords last July. Ahead of the General Election last July Jollyes launched its own 'pet manifesto' which, although it could be seen as something of a marketing ploy, actually contained some reasonable requests.
Firstly, that the legal requirement to inform police if a motorist knocks down a dog is extended to cats. I imagine the original legislation stems from the same reason that it's an offence to not pick up dog poo, because it can contain bacteria which is harmful to humans. The manifesto also raised concerns about vets over-charging for treatment and consultations - something I've experienced personally - and asked for all fireworks retailers to stock silent fireworks, which I didn't know existed. I prefer to shop at the independent Harvest Animal Feed store in my hometown of Darwen than the likes of Pets At Home which is more expensive. However, if I was to liken Jollyes to a more well-known retailer, I'd say it's like Home Bargains compared to B&Q when it comes to cost.The first feature of Jollyes which I was instantly impressed with was the pick and mix wild bird food section. You can mix and match various seeds and pellets with the price either charged by weight or one of several different sized tubs. I was also impressed with the large range of dog beds on offer and there was a large selection of treats and toys. Across the board products seemed fairly reasonably priced - we bought a 'house' for our baby cockatiel to play in and a bag of pick and mix for our chickens and ducks. Independent pet stores tend to be smaller in size than the likes of Pets At Home so Jollyes is a great, cheaper option if you need bigger items like pet beds and toys.
