Jonjo Shelvey has revealed that he is just three competitive appearances away from securing an automatic 12-month contract extension at Newcastle United - but the midfielder insists he can earn a longer-term deal.
Having made 24 Premier League appearances last season and, being a regular since Eddie Howe, the head coach, was appointed in November, Shelvey will almost certainly trigger the automatic renewal through to the summer of 2024. However, he is not content with that and is adamant he can feature in Newcastle owners' exciting vision for the club.
"At the end of the day, you’re always playing for a new contract and I’m not thick; I’m not getting younger. I’m 30 years of age and I look about 40! You just want to be part of it. The only way for this club is up and a lot of people would want to be in my shoes."
