Man United defender Jonny Evans impressed in his first start for the club since 2015 in the win over Burnley.
Like a four-leaf clover or a sub £5 pint in Manchester, footballers content to sit on the bench and play a bit part role are hard to find.
But Jonny Evans has bucked the trend. Instead of moving down, he moved up from relegated Leicester City back to Manchester United this summer. Instead of wanting to play every week, he insists he hasn't come in to take anyone's spot. Even after an excellent performance against Burnley.READ MORE: United's midfield revamp has been completed but is yet to get started
Not only that, but he scored a towering header which was unfortunately disallowed and then set up the winner with a fantastic cross-field ball into the box for Bruno Fernandes to volley home. It was the sort of pass Pep Guardiola loves to see from his left-footed centre-backs. The accurate long ball which, when used effectively, can be devastating against teams set up to defend patient build-up play. Putting the class in classic route one.
“There’s been a few injuries with Harry [Maguire] and [Lisandro] Martinez out injured and Rapha [Varane] coming back from a time out. So it’s just trying to be ready, mentally ready and I came in tonight just filling in.” And after Saturday's display that could well go on. Varane returned to action late in the game and will obviously start when fully fit, but otherwise United are desperately short on defensive options. It's not clear when Martinez, Maguire, Shaw and Aaron Wan-Bissaka will be back and even Sergio Reguilon went off with a knock at Turf Moor.
