Peru has appointed Jorge Luis Montero Cornejo as the new minister of mines and energy, following the removal of the previous minister, Rómulo Mucho, due to negligence in managing artisanal miners. The appointment comes as artisanal miners protest against a new formalisation law and the impending expiration of the Reinfo scheme.
Peru has sworn in Jorge Luis Montero Cornejo as the country's new minister of mines and energy. Montero previously served as Peru 's deputy minister of mines from November 2020 to August 2021. Last week, former minister Rómulo Mucho was removed from office over his 'negligence in the management' of small and artisanal miners. This is the second time this year that Peru has replaced its mining minister; in February, Mucho replaced Óscar Vera Gargurevich.
Artisanal miners have been protesting across the country against the expansion of the country's formalisation registry. A new law for formalisation, which would replace the current Reinfo scheme, would allow artisanal and small-scale miners six months to complete a formalisation process. On Friday, Peru's Congress voted to extend Reinfo for six months. The scheme issues temporary permits to small-scale and artisanal miners and was set to expire at the end of this year. However, the National Confederation of Small and Artisanal Mining (Confemin) has pushed for at least a two-year extension
