Italian midfielder Jorginho, who joined Arsenal from Chelsea in 2023, has agreed to leave the club when his contract expires at the end of the season.
Jorginho has agreed to depart Arsenal at the conclusion of the current season, according to recent reports. The Italian midfielder has made 72 appearances for the Gunners since his £12 million transfer from London rivals Chelsea in 2023. Jorginho was a pivotal figure during his five-year tenure at Stamford Bridge, contributing to Chelsea 's triumphs in the Champions League and Europa League, while reaching multiple FA and EFL Cup finals.
The 33-year-old has primarily served as a squad player at Arsenal but made 36 appearances last season, playing a role in Mikel Arteta's side's challenge for the Premier League title. This season, Jorginho has only started six league games, acting as a backup to fellow midfielders Declan Rice, Thomas Partey, and Mikel Merino. His contract at the Emirates Stadium is set to expire at the end of the season, and Arsenal have been pursuing a new midfielder rather than extending Jorginho's deal, with Martin Zubimendi expected to join from Real Sociedad. While Arsenal allowed Jorginho's contract to run down, they prevented his departure during the January transfer window, rejecting an offer from Brazilian club Flamengo. Mikel Arteta blocked his exit in January, and the Euro 2020 winner admitted last month that he would be thrilled at the prospect of playing in Brazil. Now, according to reports in Italy, he has signed a pre-contract with Flamengo. It is anticipated that Jorginho will join Flamengo in the summer, marking the end of his eight-year stint in the Premier League. Discussing his future at Arsenal earlier this month, Jorginho said: 'My contract is until June and my goal now is to think about the next game, which is in three days. There’s not much to think about, you know? Things happen very quickly in football, things can happen overnight, but my mind is on the next game. As I’ve already mentioned, I have never played professionally in Brazil so it would be an incredible experience for me. So this door is also open, obviously. Jorginho was an unused substitute on Sunday as Arsenal defeated Manchester City 5-1, reducing the gap to Premier League leaders Liverpool to six points.
