Barnaby Joyce fears electricity prices will skyrocket following the closure of the 52-year-old coal-fired Liddell Power Station on Friday.
The coal-fired station in the NSW Hunter Valley will complete its 10-day shutdown period on Friday and go offline after 52 years of generating energy for the country.
“I hope they can afford their power bills because a lot of people certainly can’t as they get rid of baseload power,” Mr Joyce told Sky News Australia host Peter Stefanovic. “You can’t take 1,300 megawatts out of the system and not expect there to be restrictions apply which puts up the price. He alluded that the Labor government needed to be more vigilant in the decision-making processes relating to coal-fuelled electricity generators.“They caused them because they sat back idly and didn’t have the courage to stand up and say we got to fix this.”
However, the AEMO has warned that while no immediate threats are posed to supply levels, gaps may emerge in a couple of years time.

Pay rise for migrants is ‘counterintuitive’: Barnaby JoyceShadow Veteran Affairs Minister Barnaby Joyce says it is “counterintuitive” to raise the minimum pay for temporary skilled visa holders following the critical report of Australia’s migration system. “You’re basically saying for someone to make beds in the motel which we can’t get anyone to do – if you put the wage up well the only way they can get it is they put your motel bill up,” Mr Joyce told Sky News Australia. “We should be logical like they are in so many other countries where people are happy to get paid the wages worth so much to them – it’s better than the life they had, and we get a job done that won’t get done unless you want to pay exorbitant wages. “There’s no trick to this – it just goes straight back on your bill, straight back on your food bill, straight back on your motel bill.”
