Joyeria Viejo San Juan is a family-affair and mainstay in Cleveland's Hispanic community

Joyeria Viejo San Juan is a family-affair and mainstay in Cleveland’s Hispanic community Pictured: Alexandra Pagan, jewelerCLEVELAND, Ohio -- Joyeria Viejo San Juan – also known as the Old San Juan Jewelers – is a small Hispanic-owned jewelry store located at 2705 Clark Ave. in a bustling Latino neighborhood on Cleveland’s West Side. It’s a family affair, started by Ramon Pagan more than two decades ago and is now run by his daughter, Alexandra.

When his wife, graduated from cosmetology school she got her first job at Marcello’s Beauty Salon which was a popular spot for Hispanics in the area. He carried his “maletine” around with him, selling jewelry out of the back of the car. He also had a space in the back of the beauty shop, where he was able to showcase a few jewelry products and do some jewelry repair work. Because of the opportunity that he had at the barber shop he was able to grow his customer base and business.

Her sister is not part of the store although she did help out when she was younger and enjoyed the connection she had with the customers. Alexandra has nothing but praise for her and can’t contain how proud she is of her when she speaks of her. “My sister...she loves politics. She runsA blend of jewelry sales and repair work has helped the business weather some rocky times, particularly when gold prices spike and sales of new jewelry declines.

The Pagans also offer layaway, giving customers the option to pay over three months with 25 percent down. “It really does help,” says Alexandra. “When you get someone on a fixed income, who really wants a certain pair of earrings, she gets months to pay them off. It brings me joy. The elders of the community, they know us, they check on us and bless us. They capture a piece of us and become important to us.

When asked if she sees herself doing this forever, there was no hesitation when she said, “I really do love it”. Although she would love to have more time to design, she has devoted more time to the repairs and doesn’t spend as much time on the sales floor. “There’s a sense of community behind this. I love coming to work, I love being here, I love interacting with the neighbors, just the random people.
