The judge said he would issue a formal written order and scheduled a hearing for July 11 to determine precisely what will happen to the 39-year-old Mobile man. Most likely, it will be involuntary commitment to the Taylor Hardin Secure Medical Facility in Tuscaloosa – once a bed at the overcrowded facility becomes available. Until then, Perez will remain at Mobile County Metro Jail.

Windom previously had determined that Perez was competent to stand trial. The defense waived his right to a jury trial and agreed to let the judge determine whether he was guilty. Defense attorney Glenn Davidson said his client has a long history of mental health problems since suffering a traumatic brain injury during an assault while stationed at a U.S. military base in South Korea more than a decade ago. He said Perez received an honorable discharge and a full disability rating.
